Black Girl Film Poster

At-a-Glance

To redesign the poster for Black Girl, I sought to capture the film’s visual elegance and emotional depth. Diouana’s iconic style: her headscarf, poised figure, and timeless beauty, became the focal point, symbolizing her identity and aspirations. The design features a minimalist composition with a soft palette of blues, whites, and the beautiful brown of her skin, a nod to the film’s exploration of race, identity, and belonging. An open door sits inside her silhouette, symbolizing her journey from Africa to France and the longing for a better life. This element reflects both the opportunities and constraints she encounters, embodying the tension between her dreams and her reality. Through clean lines and subtle symbolism, the poster invites viewers to connect with the quiet yet powerful story of a black woman navigating a complex world.

Successes

The result of this project was deeply fulfilling. My professor offered overwhelming approval, praising how effectively the design conveyed the emotion I intended and expressing genuine happiness with the final outcome. This feedback was incredibly meaningful, as Black Girl is not only one of my favorite films but also a cherished favorite of my mother. She was so proud of the piece that she had me print and frame it for display in our family home—a moment that made the project even more special.

This piece also went on to win awards and recognition:

This redesign was more than an assignment; it was a personal tribute to the story, its themes, and its unforgettable character. The project earned me more than just a great grade, it became a piece of art and design that I’m proud to have created and continue to draw inspiration from.
